The Black Hole

Gary Nelson · 98 minutes

The explorer craft USS Palomino is returning to Earth after a fruitless 18-month search for extra-terrestrial life when the crew comes upon a supposedly lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering near a black hole. The ship is controlled by Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his monstrous robot companion, but the initial wonderment and awe the Palomino crew feel for the ship and its resistance to the power of the black hole turn to horror as they uncover Reinhardt's plans.

Before you choose

What kind of time-travel story is this?

Limited time travel with a consequential outcome.

Meets the archive’s time-travel criteria. The mechanism is classified as Cosmic.

Why the archive makes this assessment (spoilers)

Temporal distortion appears during the climactic passage through the black hole. Most of the film is a space-station rescue and survival story, so the time-related element is brief.

The black hole produces distorted time, including re-experienced voices during the journey; broad scope includes time dilation.

How Titan works

Titan combines the archive’s quality, audience and legacy base with the significance of time travel. It is an index, not a score out of 100, and is distinct from the FMV archive’s scoring model.

Titan = base × [0.20 + 0.80 × (time-travel score ÷ 10)²]

This film: 100.04 base × 23.2% weighting.

Partial inputs flag incomplete source metadata. Provisional weighting flags a time-travel assessment that remains uncertain; it receives no additional confidence penalty.
